Firebird – named after the Firebird Opera by Stravinsky, was built by the world-renowned Palmer Johnson Shipyard in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. In 1966 this 84ft ketch Firebird was built and became the largest aluminum sailing yacht in the world at the time.
After World War II the company built their first custom yachts and in 1961 Pat Haggarty, founder of Texas Instruments, bought Palmer Johnson The ship yard then began to use aluminum in yacht building. Then in 1966, the company built the 84 ft ketch, Firebird, the largest aluminum sailing yacht in the world and then went on to Fortuna in 1979, a 100 ft aluminum boat that was the fastest yacht in the world for over a decade.
Rich in history and ground breaking in size this Palmer Johnson 84ft Ketch has benefited from one on the most beautiful Teak fit outs on a yacht of this size. Really, you just don’t see this sort of craftsmanship in teak any more and if you do its normally completed at a custom yard for the privileged few.
In the last 5 years the owner has painstakingly and at a cost of over 1 million Dollars in Firebird has made her ready for another circumnavigation in which she has competed 3 already. This includes the Antarctic and Arctic. This is testament to the robust and well-built hull and deck built by expert metal boat builders. Real deck gear, dog down solid Aluminum deck hatches, water tight compartments, collision bulk heads and simple sail handling make her a go anywhere cruiser.
Powered by a robust Diesel GM 8V71N ( currently under refit ) she cruises at 10 knots and boasts a range of 2500 NM. She is propelled by a Hendested propeller which are works or art in themselves.
The interior layout boasts an aft and very private master cabin with its own companionway. Forward and stepping down is the entrance and navigation table. Stepping down again is the amazing salon and galley which is clever in design and bathed in teak. Forward is guest and then crew berthing. To appreciate the finish and warm feeling Firebird exudes an inspection is an absolute must.
This is a great opportunity to purchase a large Aluminium ocean going vessel for a fraction of her real cost.
